Lighting A Subject… The Right Way!

Are you searching for some quick tips on how to light a film or photo subject properly? If so, you’re in luck – because inside this guide, you’re going to find the advice you’re looking for. So without any further introduction, let’s get straight to the advice we have for you.

Tip 1 – Be ready to work fast

headshot-actor-photo-tipsWhile you may have plenty of time to get your lighting perfect when you’re studying in film school, online or in the real industry, speed is often very important – because you’ll often have only a few minutes to get it right. For example, if you’re lighting a TV interview, there will be times where you only have 10 to 15 minutes to get the lighting perfect.

Typically, with actor headshot photos, you’ll have more time as still photography can be, at time, a bit slower pace than doing a talking head interview.

In these tough situations, you’ll often have little more than your on-camera light, and LED super clamp light, and your ambient light to get the shot you’re looking for. Ultimately, learning how to make use of limited options in a short time frame will make you a real asset in the industry – so focusing on these aspects of interview lighting is certainly worth your time.

Tip 2 – Get creative

One of the best ways to learn proper interview lighting technique is to study the basics, but once you’ve mastered these, don’t be afraid to spread your wings and get a little creative. Of course, while you don’t want the lighting to distract from the content of the interview, there’s no denying that many of the industry’s top players aren’t following the conventional rule book when it comes to lighting interview.

As an example, one of the most popular ways to learn interview lighting is to create the ‘spotlight’ effect with a dark background, which is great for illuminating the subject, but can sometimes create a very unnatural look. Ultimately, being creative is the key to setting yourself apart while still performing the job that’s expected of you.

Why You Need Professional Photos On Your Business Website

Do you run a business and have a website for your business? If so, then you want to use professional photos. When I mean professional photos I don’t necessarily mean photos taken by a professional, these photos can be taken by you. The idea here is that you’re focusing on creating images that are framed well (ie. good composition), are of high quality and are lit well. Most importantly, these photos are designed to evoke a certain emotion from a website visitor.

If you don’t have expensive gear, don’t worry. You can still take really great photos with something as simple as a iphone. Check out the video further down learn more about iphone photos.

First impressions are everything, and if you have low quality amateur photos on your business website, then your site’s visitors may not be impressed. However, if you use professional high-quality photos, then your visitors will be very impressed. This means they will likely have an immediate great first impression of your website and your business.

I recently spoke with a company that performs furnace repairs as a service. Although this type of business is not one you’d traditionally expect to have high quality photos, they’ve found an increase in the number of phone call to their website after switching all the photos. Getting the framing and lighting right can make a huge difference in the way perspective customers or clients perceive you.

If you sell products, then you will want to have professional photos of your products. This will show off your products in the best light, and this will entice people to purchase your items. When you have high-quality photos on your business site, your website’s visitors will notice them and they will be impressed with the photos of your products and this may increase your chances of selling more products.

Another reason why you should use professional photos on your business website is because it will help make your business standout, especially if you use unique photos that nobody else is really using. You might be surprised at how much your site can standout when it is filled with high-quality professional images. In fact, if you update your site with photos on a regular basis, and they are quality photos, you might increase your chances of getting repeat visitors, which can lead to more sales.

Those are just a few reasons why it’s important to have professional photos on your business website. There are many benefits of using quality and professional images on your site. If you want to experience all of the benefits, then you should start using professional photos on your business website.

If you feel like you need even more help you can always find a photography mentor. They can help you learn more about light as well as teaching you other skills.
